MagIC featured in NOVA Science 2025: a pillar of innovation and societal impact

Detalhe da Notícia

The 2025 edition of NOVA Science magazine has just been released, and MagIC Research Center takes center stage. Under the theme "Excellence in Research: Transforming the Future," the publication highlights our center as a key driver of the technological and management development within the NOVA University Lisbon ecosystem.

The magazine showcases MagIC’s strategic focus on the frontiers of knowledge. By integrating Data Science and Management, our center is highlighted for its pioneering research in Generative and Interpretable AI, Synthetic Data Generation, and Geospatial Artificial Intelligence. These fields are not just academic exercises; they are the tools we are using to address the complex challenges of Health, Smart Cities, Sustainability, and Tourism.

This innovation is made possible by a community of leading researchers. The latest FCT evaluation once again rated MagIC as "Excellent," and the magazine celebrates a significant milestone for our center: 11 of our members are featured in the World’s Top 2% Scientists list (Stanford/Elsevier ranking). This high concentration of talent ensures that the research produced at MagIC meets the highest international standards of prestige and rigor.

MagIC is also a university leader in the transition toward more transparent and accessible research. The magazine notes that 85.7% of MagIC’s publications in indexed journals are available through immediate Open Access. This commitment to Open Science ensures that our findings are not locked behind paywalls but are available to the global scientific community and the public, maximizing the reach and transparency of our work.

This transparency and excellence translate directly into real-world change. We are particularly proud that the magazine chose to highlight two of MagIC’s projects as "Award-Winning Impact Narratives" for 2025:

  • AI4IA (led by Mauro Castelli): A project using AI and Natural Language Processing to automate legislative impact assessments, making regulations fairer and more transparent for citizens.
  • The Sustainable Health Index (led by Pedro Simões Coelho): A research-based compass that has transformed how Portugal monitors its health system, bridging the gap between scientific evidence and national policy dialogue.

Furthermore, the center’s leadership in the public square is reinforced by our Coordinator, Leonardo Vanneschi, who is featured in the "NOVA Talks" section, discussing how dialogue between researchers and society is essential for shaping the future.

We invite our community to read the full 2025 edition of NOVA Science and explore the stories of excellence that define our center, available here.
