4 Interdisciplinary PhD Research Scholarships

MagIC – Information Management Research Center at NOVA IMS is opening a call for 4 PhD Research Scholarships funded under the centre’s strategic multiannual funding programme supported by FCT.
The scholarships aim to support original doctoral research projects positioned at the intersection of Management and Data Science, contributing to innovative and interdisciplinary scientific research with both academic and societal impact.

Applications are open until 26 June 2026 at 20:00 (Lisbon time).

Interdisciplinary Supervision Requirement

All applications must include an interdisciplinary supervisory team composed of:

  • at least one supervisor from the Management research streams;
  • at least one supervisor from the Data Science research streams.

Applicants are encouraged to identify research topics integrating conceptual and methodological approaches from both domains.

External co-supervisors from other institutions may also participate.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree;
  • have knowledge in areas related to Information Management or Data Science;
  • not previously have benefited from an FCT-funded PhD scholarship;
  • reside permanently in Portugal at the start date of the scholarship.
  • not hold a doctoral degree.

The call is open to both national and international candidates.

 

Very important for international candidates:

In the case of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and in order to ensure the principle of equal treatment for applicants holding foreign and national academic degrees, recognition of such degrees and conversion of the corresponding final classification to the Portuguese grading scale are mandatory.

Recognition of foreign academic degrees and diplomas, as well as conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese grading scale, may be requested at any Portuguese public higher education institution or at the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES, only in the case of automatic recognition). Applicants are advised to consult the
DGES portal at the following address: http://www.dges.gov.pt

 

Evaluation Process

Applications will be evaluated by an international evaluation panel composed of internationally recognised professors and researchers from MagIC’s Scientific Advisory Board, ensuring transparency, scientific excellence, and independence in the evaluation process.

Evaluation criteria include:

  • applicant merit;
  • quality and originality of the work plan;
  • interdisciplinary integration;
  • quality and complementarity of the supervisory team.

 

Required Documents

Applications must include:

  • CV (preferably exported from CIÊNCIAVITAE);
  • work plan;
  • motivation letter in English;
  • identification of the proposed supervisory team;
  • academic degree certificates;
  • recognition/conversion documents for foreign degrees (when applicable).
