About the Project

SAPIEN – South and Atlantic Pedagogical Innovation & Excellence Network

The SAPIEN project aims to foster pedagogical innovation and excellence across Portugal's southern and Atlantic regions. By uniting nine higher education institutions, encompassing 53 organizational units and covering approximately 40% of the national territory, including the Azores and Madeira, SAPIEN seeks to transform teaching practices through a collaborative and systemic approach. The initiative emphasizes the development of a student-centered pedagogical model, professional development for educators, and the creation of enriched learning environments, integrating digital tools and resources. This aligns with the objectives of the "Impulso Mais Digital" measure under the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), funded by the NextGeneration EU program.

Partnership

The SAPIEN consortium comprises the following institutions: Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Coordinator), Universidade dos Açores, Universidade do Algarve, Universidade de Évora, Universidade da Madeira, Instituto Politécnico de Beja, Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre, Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal, and Egas Moniz – Cooperativa de Ensino Superior.

Our Contribution

NOVA IMS contributes to SAPIEN by applying its expertise in data science and digital education to develop innovative pedagogical strategies. The institution focuses on designing flexible learning pathways tailored to non-technical disciplines, integrating data-driven approaches and digital tools to enhance teaching and learning experiences.

NOVA IMS also plays a relevant role in evaluating the impact of the implemented methodologies, ensuring alignment with national and European educational transformation goals.
