About the Project

AI4SMARTAUDIT – Use of Artificial Intelligence on Audit of the EU Funds

The AI4SMARTAUDIT project aims to modernize the audit framework for European funds by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced analytical methods into the auditing process. This initiative responds to the pressing need to enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and transparency of audits across EU Member States while significantly reducing administrative burdens.

Building upon the successful Portuguese proof of concept, the project expands its application to three additional Member States—Germany, Greece, and the Czech Republic—testing AI-based predictive models that estimate the likelihood and amount of errors in operational programmes. The project’s ultimate objective is to create a more reliable, efficient, and adaptable European audit framework that ensures the sound management of EU funds and safeguards the Union’s financial interests.

Through advanced data-driven methodologies, AI4SMARTAUDIT seeks to improve error detection, fraud prevention, and resource optimization within audit authorities. The initiative will enhance audit accuracy, lower operational costs, and enable proportional audit efforts aligned with risk profiles. It also promotes the digital transformation of audit systems, supporting evidence-based decision-making and the broader EU digital governance agenda.

By fostering knowledge transfer and capacity-building, the project empowers audit authorities to adopt AI-assisted methods sustainably, thereby contributing to stronger management and control systems, better governance of EU funds, and ultimately, improved economic and social outcomes across Europe.

The project will:

  • Develop predictive models using AI and data science to support the audit of EU funds.
  • Pilot and validate AI-based methodologies in three national audit authorities.
  • Design a new AI-driven audit framework to improve efficiency and proportionality.
  • Reduce audit workload and costs while increasing the reliability of audit conclusions.
  • Disseminate results through workshops, training, and EU-wide communication activities to promote uptake by other Member States.
