About the Project

AIvents – AI-Driven Event Management in Oeste

Coordinated by NOVA IMS, the AIvents project addresses the pressing need to leverage data science and artificial intelligence to optimize public event management. The project emerges in close collaboration with the Comunidade Intermunicipal do Oeste (OesteCIM), which, through its "Smart Region" initiative, has developed a comprehensive data repository encompassing variables such as monetary transactions, traffic congestion, energy consumption, CO₂ emissions, public transport usage, and accommodation figures. Despite the richness of these datasets, the region still lacks advanced, AI-supported tools to effectively manage and forecast the multifaceted impacts of cultural, sports, and public events.

AIvents responds to this challenge by developing a data-driven platform that integrates real-time and historical data analysis, predictive modeling, and natural language processing. It aims to enhance strategic decision-making for public administrators and event organizers by enabling intuitive, evidence-based insights into the economic, social, and environmental impacts of public events.

Grounded in methodologies like difference-in-differences (DiD) and advanced machine learning, the platform will enable scenario simulation, trend forecasting, and causal analysis, providing a pioneering approach to event management in Portugal’s public sector. A user-friendly chatbot powered by NLP will allow stakeholders to query the system in natural language, accessing historical data and predictive outputs, thus democratizing access to complex analytics.

NOVA IMS brings to the project its deep expertise in data integration, AI, and urban analytics. The initiative is structured around six key tasks — from data preparation to simulation and conversational AI development — and is expected to produce high-impact academic publications, conference communications, computational applications, and a pilot-tested digital platform.

Through its multi-stakeholder and interdisciplinary design, AIvents promotes digital transformation, regional sustainability, and smarter governance.
