About the Project

ENCOMPASS - ENergy COmplexity Mapping for Pathways to Advance Sustainable Systems

The ENCOMPASS project, coordinated by NOVA IMS, addresses the urgent need to advance sustainable energy systems by mapping the renewable energy value chain in Iberia. Supported by NOVA’s Interdisciplinary Research Community (NIRC) on Sustainable Energy Systems and funded by Galp, this initiative leverages economic complexity methodologies to provide strategic insights for the European Union’s Net-Zero Industry Act.

By integrating patent data, industry statistics, trade flows, and economic and demographic indicators, the project aims to:

  • Identify Iberia’s unique capabilities in renewable energy manufacturing.
  • Assess the feasibility and economic desirability of EU self-reliance in the renewable energy value chain.
  • Provide data-driven policy recommendations to enhance industrial and technological pathways toward clean energy leadership.

Through a multidisciplinary approach, ENCOMPASS seeks to position Iberia as a key player in the EU’s sustainable energy transition, supporting energy independence and fostering technological innovation in renewable energy systems.

Funding

Funding programme: NIRC on Sustainable Energy Systems (Funded by Galp)

Funding to NOVA IMS: €39,702.44

Our Contribution

As the coordinator, NOVA IMS leads the ENCOMPASS project by applying its expertise in data science and economic complexity analysis to:

  • Map the renewable energy value chain in Iberia by leveraging patent, industry, trade, and demographic data.
  • Analyze the transition toward EU energy self-reliance, identifying technological strengths and industrial opportunities.
  • Develop data-driven policy recommendations to support strategic decision-making for industry leaders and policymakers.
  • Use economic complexity methodologies to assess the feasibility, economic viability, and sustainability of renewable energy deployment.

Contribution to the SDGs

  • SDG 7 Affordable And Clean Energy
  • SDG 9 Industry, Innovation, And Infrastructure
  • SDG 13 Climate Action

Partnership

Partnership:NOVA IMS is the coordinator, in partnership with NOVA FCT (CENIMAT I3N, CEMOP) which contributes with expertise in renewable energy materials, photovoltaics, and sustainability-focused R&D strategies.
