Smart Region Integrated Territorial Intelligence Analytical Platform

Topo Projetos

About the Project

The project aimed to equip the Oeste Intermunicipal Community (CIM Oeste) with its first integrated territorial intelligence platform, leveraging big data and data science. This platform provided the ability to collect, store, process, and analyze data from operational systems and municipal sensor networks, combined with data generated by public Wi-Fi networks across the municipalities. Doing so transformed the paradigm of tourism planning and management, adopting a Smart & Sustainable Tourism approach.

One of the project’s key innovations was its focus on understanding how people interact with the CIM Oeste region, using Wi-Fi access point data to analyze movements in both space and time. By merging this information with municipal operational systems, the project developed a dynamic, real-time application that enhanced the experience for residents, workers, and visitors. This integration of diverse data streams allowed for smarter, context-driven marketing actions and improved decision-making for tourism management.

Our contribution

NOVA IMS was the coordinator of this project that led to the development of this territorial analytical platform designed to change the paradigm of how local authorities manage public policies, using data-driven decision-making.

Since the project's completion, the Smart Region team has expanded its model to collaborate with other inter-municipal communities, even preparing to bring the Smart Region concept to Brazil through a cooperation agreement. Additionally, NOVA Cidade – Urban Analytics Lab, the project's key partner, received the prestigious ESRI SAG Award, which will be presented at the upcoming ESRI Annual World Conference, recognizing the project’s outstanding contributions to geographic information systems (GIS) and urban analytics.

This project has set a benchmark for leveraging data-driven regional planning insights, significantly advancing smart tourism research and sustainable urban development.
