MozambES - MozambES: Payments for mangrove ecosystem services in Mozambique

Mangroves are unique ecosystems, providing vital benefits to poor populations in coastal areas. Mozambique, a region prone to environmental catastrophes, holds 2.3% of global mangrove coverage. Low income and strong reliance on natural resources affect the ability of local populations to face environmental challenges, making this region highly vulnerable. This project (1) assesses the economic value provided by mangrove ecosystem services in Mozambique, (2) evaluates the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of a Payments for Ecosystem Services(PES) field experiment.

This project contributes for SDGs 1-5, 10 13-15 and 17.

Impact:

After identifying a few mangrove sites (urban and peri-urban) representative of the diversity of the region and upon which local populations depend, the benefits provided by those ES will be estimated using economic valuation methods. Second, a PES scheme for conservation/restoration will be implemented at a selected site chosen among those previously identified in close collaboration with our local partners and representatives.
