Joana Gonçalves-Sá
Joana Gonçalves-Sá is a Principal Investigator at the Laboratory of Particle Physics (LIP) and at NOVA University Lisbon – NOVA LINCS. She holds a degree in Physics Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico – UL and, under the Gulbenkian PhD Program in Biomedicine, earned her PhD in Systems Biology from ITQB-NOVA, having carried out her thesis research at Harvard University, USA.
She was an Associate Professor at the Nova School of Business and Economics (2018 – 2020) and a principal investigator at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) (2012-2018). At the IGC, she also led the Science and Society Initiative, a science communication and outreach team, and the PhD Program “Science for Development” (PGCD), aimed at strengthening science in the Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP).
Since 2020, she has coordinated the “Social Physics and Complexity – SPAC” research group at the Laboratory for Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP). She has received three European Research Council grants to study the role of human and algorithmic biases in the spread of disinformation, the most recent in the context of implementing the Digital Services Act.
