The NOVA Interdisciplinary Research Community (NIRC) on Sustainable Energy Systems held its first workshop, bringing together researchers from different NOVA University of Lisbon units, including NOVA IMS, to tackle pressing issues related to renewable energy production and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Led by Professor Guilherme Vitorino, coordinator of the NOVA IMS’s Innovation & Analytics Lab, the workshop featured provoking questions on posters placed around the room, such as the Iberian Peninsula's potential to become a leading European laboratory for renewable energy production, the potential of biomethane as a sustainable alternative to natural gas, and the revolutionary potential of used electric car batteries to transform the energy industry. The researchers formed teams and developed innovative projects aimed at addressing these challenges and contributing to sustainable energy systems.

MagIC researchers, Ian Scott and Ricardo Martins, were among the participants in the NIRC workshop, demonstrating the centre's dedication to addressing global sustainability challenges. MagIC's unique capabilities in bridging the gap between research and real-world applications enable researchers to optimize energy systems, develop data-driven insights, and design sustainable management practices. Collaborating with experts from diverse fields, including engineering, economics, and law, MagIC researchers foster an innovative approach to developing solutions that address critical challenges in sustainable energy production and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Through events like the NIRC workshop, MagIC researchers continue to drive interdisciplinary collaborations that lead to the development of innovative solutions for a sustainable future.
