DAPHnE – Data Journalism Practices from Higher Education towards VET Providers

About the Project

DAPHnE – Data Journalism Practices from Higher Education towards VET Providers

DAPHnE aims to strengthen Europe's capacity to educate the next generation of professionals in Data Journalism and Data Communication by bridging the gap between higher education, vocational education and training (VET), and the evolving needs of industry. As data-driven decision-making and artificial intelligence become increasingly embedded in journalism, communication, and public information, the demand for professionals capable of analysing, interpreting and communicating complex data has grown substantially.

The project brings together universities, research organisations, vocational education providers, professional associations and industry partners to develop an innovative European educational ecosystem for Data Journalism and Data Communication. Through a multidisciplinary approach combining journalism, communication, data science and artificial intelligence, DAPHnE will create flexible learning pathways that respond to current labour market needs.

The project will develop competency frameworks, modular learning resources, assessment methodologies, MOOCs and pilot educational programmes at both Higher Education (ISCED 7) and VET (ISCED 5) levels. By promoting collaboration between academia and industry and providing open educational resources, DAPHnE will contribute to improving digital skills, fostering data literacy and strengthening innovation in journalism and communication across Europe.

Partnership

Partnership: The project is coordinated by the University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy) and brings together an interdisciplinary consortium of 11 organisations from four European countries, combining expertise in higher education, vocational education, digital innovation, journalism, artificial intelligence and professional training.

The consortium includes: University of Rome Tor Vergata (IT), Universidade NOVA de Lisboa – NOVA IMS (PT), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (GR), Evodevo (IT), INOVA+ (PT), University of Alcalá (ES), Polytechnic Institute of Guarda (PT), International Cooperation Centre (IT), DEFOIN (ES), Order of Journalists of Lombardy (IT), and Datapitch (IT).

Our Contribution

NOVA IMS contributes its recognised expertise in information management, data science, artificial intelligence, digital transformation and innovative educational methodologies to support the development of a new European educational framework for Data Journalism and Data Communication.

The institution plays an active role in designing and validating the project's educational pathways, contributing to the development of modular learning resources, innovative teaching methodologies and competency-based curricula that integrate data analysis, data visualisation, storytelling and artificial intelligence within journalism and communication education. Drawing on its extensive experience in European projects on data literacy and digital education, NOVA IMS supports the creation of learning materials that respond to both higher education and vocational training needs.

NOVA IMS also contributes to the development of the project's digital learning ecosystem by supporting the design of MOOCs and open educational resources that will make the project's training materials freely accessible to learners, educators and professionals across Europe. Furthermore, the institution participates in the Higher Education pilot implementation, providing academic expertise, evaluation and feedback to ensure the quality and relevance of the developed curricula before their wider deployment.
