In response to the construction industry's substantial impact on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, NOVA IMS proudly joins the DECO2 project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme, aiming to accelerate the decarbonization of the construction sector by developing a comprehensive portfolio of location-specific and user-centric materials and renovation systems.

Led by the Institute for European Energy and Climate Policy (IEECP), DECO2 brings together expertise from eight countries, establishing robust partnerships within legal and regulatory frameworks. Beyond technical solutions, the project ambitiously delves into the social aspects of adopting sustainable practices in the built environment.

Under the leadership of Professor Tiago Oliveira, NOVA IMS will play a vital role in studying the social dimensions of decarbonization pathways and circular business models. This includes an examination of user behaviour, attitudes, and willingness to embrace sustainable renovation practices and circular economy principles.

The potential impact of DECO2 is profound and far-reaching. By directly addressing the pressing issues of energy consumption and emissions in the construction industry, the project holds the promise to reduce energy consumption in buildings by up to 30%, making significant strides towards the EU's climate goals. Additionally, DECO2 seeks to establish a circular economy model in the construction sector, minimizing waste and promoting the reuse and recycling of materials. Ultimately, these efforts aim to enhance the overall sustainability of the built environment, fostering a healthier and more environmentally friendly living space for all.

This project is seamlessly integrated into the Information Systems Research Stream of the MagIC research centre where the primary focus is on comprehending the pivotal factors influencing the diffusion, adoption, and success of information.
